PRO BONO HONOREES

The City Bar Justice Center salutes the following individuals who were honored at our annual Epstein Awards event in October 2019. The awards ceremony is named for Jeremy G. Epstein (1946-2009), a Shearman & Sterling LLP partner and board member at the City Bar Justice Center, The Legal Aid Society, and the Fund for Modern Courts. Mr. Epstein logged over 5,000 hours of pro bono and public service over 20 years.

Planning and Estates Law Project: Erica Gómez, Court Attorney Pro Se Office, New York County Surrogate’s Court

This year, Erica Gomez of the New York County Surrogate’s Court Pro Se Office was recognized for her outstanding assistance to the Justice Center’s Planning and Estates Law Project, or “PELP.” Separate and apart from her daily work assisting the public as they navigate the surrogate’s court system, Erica is a consistent volunteer at PELP’s monthly legal clinics, at which experienced trusts and estates attorneys offer low-income New Yorkers free legal assistance with end-of-life planning, probate, and other estate matters. In addition to assisting PELP clinic clients, Erica offers invaluable service to PELP’s operations as a whole by providing other volunteer attorneys with technical advice on court processes, and by serving as a conduit for pro se clients who either need assistance at the courthouse or need help that the PELP team can provide.
