On October 26, 2020, the City Bar Justice Center commemorated the tremendous response of ten volunteer attorneys who rose to meet the challenges of 2020, awarding each of them with a 2020 Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award. Our honorees demonstrated an unwavering commitment to supporting disadvantaged New Yorkers, particularly in times of crisis. Congratulations!

Legal Hotline: John A. Beranbaum, Partner at Beranbaum Menken LLP, and President of the New York Chapter of the National Employment Lawyers Association

The Legal Hotline provides free legal advice, information and brief services to low-income New Yorkers on a wide range of civil issues, such as landlord-tenant matters and employment, consumer and family law.

We are very pleased to confer a 2020 Outstanding Pro Bono Service Award to John A. Beranbaum, founder and partner of Beranbaum Menken, LLP and president of the New York Chapter of the National Employment Lawyers Association, for his leadership on the Legal Hotline’s COVID-19 Expansion initiative.

Mr. Beranbaum recruited and organized a team of NELA members to quickly get on board when we reached out for help this Spring to expand our capacity to assist New Yorkers on COVID-19 related employment matters. Since May, Mr. Beranbaum and his team have been advising and providing brief services to low-income clients reaching out to our Legal Hotline about COVID-19 related employment and labor law matters such as reviewing and advising on severance agreements; advising on employees’ rights to Personal Protective Equipment and sick leave; and addressing wrongful termination and unpaid wages claims.

To date, under Mr. Beranbaum’s leadership, NELA has advised and completed brief services for nearly 50 Legal Hotline callers in search of immediate assistance.
