The Immigrant Justice Project assists asylum seekers fleeing persecution, survivors of violent crime and trafficking, and individuals seeking humanitarian protection and other relief. 

Amanda B. Asaro and Elizabeth Platonova, associates at Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo, P.C., are being recognized for their inspired advocacy in support of two asylum seekers. One of their was the daughter of an anti-gang police officer who had been threatened and brutally attacked in her home country. Despite the events leading to her claim, the client was denied asylum in 2018.

Seven years later, after fierce litigation, their client’s case was remanded to the same immigration judge who had denied her claim in 2018. At their remand conference this summer, the judge offered Amanda and Elizabeth the option of  a trial date in nine days, or in 2027. The Mintz team rose to the challenge and took the early date.

Within the week, Amanda and Elizabeth submitted a 180-page filing that included a memo of law, updated affidavits, an expert declaration about the harms faced by their client, as well as current country conditions and other documents in support of their client’s claim. Two days later, after a hearing on remand, their client was granted asylum.

The team then took on the representation of a second asylum seeker slated for a September trial. The trial, however, was cancelled with just two hours’ notice, but we know this team stands ready for any new date! Amanda and Elizabeth exemplify the litigation skills, dedication, and commitment required during challenging times.
