The Cancer Advocacy and Elderlaw Projects help cancer patients, cancer survivors, and seniors prepare their wills and healthcare advance directives, as well as provide advice and assistance with cancer-related employment discrimination and unjust medical insurance denials. 

Marie Hopkins, Assistant General Counsel at AIG, has provided longstanding support to both the Cancer Advocacy and Elderlaw projects and has significantly impacted the lives of many seniors, people affected by cancer, and their families. As the projects’ key contact at AIG, she has been an invaluable ally – scheduling trainings to recruit new volunteers, encouraging them to take classes, and sometimes teaming up with her colleagues to assist.

Through Marie’s efforts, AIG volunteers have aided people facing a variety of challenges. One case in particular involved a client who was diagnosed with terminal cancer and was anxious to put his personal affairs in order. The client was shocked to learn that the documents he had attempted to prepare were in fact invalid. Fortunately, his case was assigned to an AIG team, who took the time to prepare a Will and advance directives for him. These efforts provided him with great relief and a sense of peace knowing that his wishes were clear and would be honored. The client passed away three months later.

With the help of Marie, as well as her team, our clients have been able to organize their affairs and document their wishes about future health and estate decisions, while receiving caring and compassionate assistance.
